Last Mammoths

• Tutkijat ovat nyt saaneet selville, että viimeiset villimammutit ovat luultavasti kuolleet eristyksillä saarilla.
• Mittaamalla geneettisen monimuotoisuuden määrän kussakin yksilössä he pystyivät tekemään johtopäätöksiä mammutin historiasta ja sukupuutosta.
• Viime jääkäyden lopussa, n.1000 vuotta sitten populaatio väheni jälleen.

• The scientists used DNA from two specimens, the 45,000-year-old soft tissue remains of a woolly mammoth found in northeastern Siberia, and a 4,300-year-old tooth from one found on Wrangel Island
• About 300,000 years ago, the population of woolly mammoths suddenly declined
• By the time Wrangel Island separated from the mainland, the worldwide population was already disappearing.
• The parents of the specimen from Wrangel Island were very closely related.
• this does not mean that a Jurassic Park — or a Pleistocene Park, as it would have to be called — is around the corner.
• Researchers have now sequenced the genome of the woolly mammoth and have concluded that the last members of the species probably  died on isolated iland.

Apple TV Remote Expected to Add Touch Pad in Redesign MAY 4, 2015

Apple TV Remote  in Redesign 

• Apple on jo pitkään miettinyt tv-säätimensä uusimista
• Uudessa versiossa on kosketuslevy, ja se on myös hieman paksumpi
• Uuden laitteen toivottaisiin olevan helppokäyttöinen ja helposti ymmärrettävä

• Adding a touch pad to the Apple TV remote would bring it in line with Apple’s other accessories. 
• The redesign for the new remote will be the first big change to the Apple remote since the Apple TV’s introduction in 2007
• Apple has long ridiculed remote controls for being too complex.
• The touch pad can be used for scrolling around and there will also be two physical buttons
• Steve Jobs, Apple’s co-founder, had long emphasized simplicity in product design, an aesthetic that had long permeated the company’s offerings
• The new Apple TV is expected to be introduced this June during Apple’s annual conference for software developers, according to the employee briefed on the remote

New Study Links Weather Extremes to Global Warming:

• Kohtalaisen ilmastonlämpenemisen seurauksena päästöt ovat nelinkertaistuneet. Planeettojen lämpeneminen on ollut maltillisempaa.
• Rankkasateet voisivat yli kaksinkertaistua myöhemmin tällä vuosisadalla jos päästöt jatkuvat yhtö korkealla tasolla.
• Chicagon lämpötilat olivat lähellä tai ylitse 100 astetta neljän päivän ajan heinä ja- kesäkuussa. Tämä tekee tutkimuksesta hankalaa

• Dr. Fischer and Dr. Knutti focused on more common heat and precipitation extremes. 

• Since the 19th century, the earth has warmed by about 1.5 degrees  
• The influence of greenhouse gases on more common types of weather extremes.
• Scientists believe both were made more likely by the human emissions that are warming the planet.
• The planetary warming has had a more moderate effect on intense rainstorms 
• The moderate global warming that has already occurred as a result of human emissions has quadrupled the frequency of certain heat extremes since the Industrial Revolution
